Activists have defeated plans for a mega-incinerator near Merthyr Tydfil. South Wales WIN exposes
a tale of official collusion.
Plaid Cymru councillor for Ystrad Mynach Martyn James said: “Plaid Cymru’s national policy is not to be involved in incineration – that was part of the manifesto.
“My personal opinion is that we should pull out of Project Gwyrdd and take no part in the proposals. I do think it’s already settled and these events are just paying lip-service. more here

Dafydd Elis-Thomas is also pro-incineration now Chair of the Environment Committee but not an ally in the 'green agenda'.
As you may be aware, I’ve been involved in opposing the incinerators in Splott and Merthyr in recent years and have consistently opposed incineration.
I do not believe that incinerators are necessary or desirable. It is an old technology that wastes the earth’s precious resources by burning them instead of making the most of sorting and recycling as much as possible. Recycling adds value and jobs, as is shown in Friends of the Earth’s ‘Green Jobs for the Heads of the Valleys’ report that I helped launch last year.
Most of the carbon in what’s burnt is released into the air as CO2 and it is the worst waste processing option in terms of greenhouse gas emissions. I’m also concerned about the impact on air quality locally and the possible damage that ultra-fine particles causes.
It also doesn’t make economic sense to tie ourselves to long contracts to burn our rubbish when we want to reduce our waste and recycle as much as we can. Having large plants and lorries carrying waste across Wales also goes against the proximity principle that we should be dealing with our waste as close as possible to where it’s produced.
We have to think long term and plan for a better Wales in the future, for everyone in Wales, and building incinerators does not fit in with my vision for a better, safer and more sustainable Wales.
OF 'MALADMINISTRATION'
The Ombudsman for Public Services in Wales has found Cardiff's LibDem-Plaid Cymru council guilty of 'maladministration' for failing to consult local residents over the the proposed Viridor waste incinerator at Trident Park, south Cardiff.
After submissions from the Cardiff Against The Incinerator (CATI) campaign, the Ombudsman has issued his verdict that, 'Given the nature, significance and siting of the proposed development, the consultation exercise fell short of what could reasonably be expected
of it, which amounted to maladministration on the part of the Council'.
Mr Peter Tyndall also found that: 'A number of individuals ... given where they lived, suffered an injustice through not being adequately consulted'.
These individuals live in the Galleon Way complex of high-rise flats, which overlook the incinerator site at Trident Park. The Ombudsman has asked Cardiff Council to apologise to three people at the complex
represented by CATI and to review its consultation procedures.
But CATI secretary Ed Schluessel commented that, 'Thousands of residents there and elsewhere in the vicinity have never been directly informed by Cardiff Council, the Environment Agency Wales or Viridor
about the giant pollution factory planned just a few hundred yards away from their homes'.
He also insisted that nearby businesses have not been consulted either.
CATI is now writing to Welsh Assembly Government minister for the environment and sustainable development, John Griffiths, to demand a
full public inquiry into the planning and consultation procedures surrounding Viridor's plan for an incinerator at Trident Park.
CATI also plan their first-ever public meeting in Roath, to take place at 7pm on April 19th at Plasnewydd Community Hall, Shakespeare Street off City Road. All are welcome to attend.
A copy of the Ombudsman's report is available in full online at http://www.scribd.com/doc/88770482 .

Cardiff County Council's failure to notify and consult residents and businesses over a proposed waste incinerator in Splott amounts to "maladministration," the Public Services Ombudsman for Wales has concluded.
In his interim report, investigator Steffan Evans told the Cardiff Against the Incinerator (Cati) group that the Viridor plan is of "considerable importance with potentially significant environmental implications for the immediate and wider locality.
